Coach Clare Van Hoorebeke

image011004Anaheim High’s beloved head football coach Clare Van Hoorebeke led Colonist football teams to repeated victories from 1950 – 1972. Known as the “Dutch Master,” Hoorebeke forever changed the face of high school football. To this day, coaching principles pioneered by Van and his loyal staff have served as the model for football programs in Orange County and across the county.

The late Van Hoorebeke, credited with bringing films, scouting and weight training to the high school level, won 16 Sunset League titles and 190 games at Anaheim .

He was named Orange County Coach of the Year in 1964. His players were called “Vanmen.” Under his direction, the Colonists football team defined high school football in Orange County , the entire state and, perhaps, the entire country that continues to be emulated to this day.

After stepping down as head coach, he served as Anaheim Athletic Director until 1976.
